Artist Statement
I have drawn inspiration from and admired many different art forms and many wonderful artists over the years. My work is a response to this creativity and my paintings encompass some of the qualities that have made a profound impression and that have germinated and found their way into my own work. I feel that spontaneity as well as careful and considered work, creates the dynamic and contemporary qualities in my paintings. Both watercolor effects and textural possibilities allow for unlimited explorations of interpretation. Starting with a classical under painting and building with many transparent layers; I use a vibrant palette, strong compositions, and subtle value shifts to create a compelling painting. Artistic endeavors, however they are manifest, are part of what makes us human and I am grateful to be able to contribute with my work.
Bio
Born in England, I grew up in B.C., the mountains, ocean and forests nurturing a curiosity and love for the natural world. Have travelled extensively, many memories, impressions and images inspire my work. I paint for the sheer joy of transporting myself into a landscape, observing the complex patterns of nature or the meditative qualities of still life. I have always loved creating with form and color and have worked for many years with stained glass, landscape design and more recently with paint and canvas. My painting style is constantly evolving; whether painting representatively or interpretatively, I am constantly striving for a meaningful connection with my subject matter and through my work share my interpretation and impressions with others. I enjoy being part of the art community in Victoria and have held positions in the Oak Bay Art Club, Victoria Sketch Club, Community Arts Council as well, participated in many solo and group shows on the Island. I have been honored to have shown in prestigious art shows such as the Sooke Fine Art Show and Sydney Fine Art Show. Some of my award-winning work is held in collections throughout North America, Asia and Europe.
