On Dec 15th at 10 am, join us for the traditional “Nine Lessons & Carols”, followed by Christmas treats in the hall. Come and experience the beauty of this service and the hard work and joyful preparation of the choir.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols was introduced in 1918 to bring a more imaginative approach to worship. It was first broadcast in 1928 and is now broadcast to millions of people around the world.
The service includes carols and readings from the Bible. The opening carol is always 'Once in Royal David's City.'
"Wherever the service is heard and however it is adapted, whether the music is provided by choir or congregation, the pattern and strength of the service, as Dean Milner-White pointed out, derive from the lessons and not the music. ‘The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God ...’ seen ‘through the windows and words of the Bible’. The centre of the service is still found by those who ‘go in heart and mind’ and who consent to follow where the story leads."
