Coffee and Conversations!

Thursdays 9-945am in the Chapel.

STARTING MARCH 10th we are going to have time to catch up with one another and share conversations about the many images of God in scripture through the lens of a thought-provoking book by Lauren F Winner. (Schedule below.) A few copies of the book have been ordered and will be available for purchase (after Wed Feb 23) at the Church office for $22.

"There are hundreds of metaphors for God, but the church only uses a few familiar images: creator, judge, saviour, father. In Wearing God, Lauren Winner gathers a number of lesser-known tropes, reflecting on how they work biblically and culturally, and reveals how they can deepen our spiritual lives.

Exploring the notion of God as clothing, Winner reflects on how we are “clothed with Christ” or how “God fits us like a garment.” She then analyzes how clothing functions culturally to shape our ideals and identify our community, and ruminates on how this new metaphor can function to create new possibilities for our lives. For each biblical metaphor—God as the vine/vintner who animates life; the lactation consultant; and the comedian, showing us our follies, for example—Winner surveys the historical, literary, and cultural landscapes in order to revive and heal our souls."

Winner proposes these questions:

“How do our images of God draw us into worship, reverence, adoration of God?”

“How do our images of God help us greet one another as bearers of the image of God?”

“How do we pray to the God who is king or shepherd?… How does the God who is king or shepherd pray in us?”

We are looking forward to this conversation!

Coffee time will be followed by Eucharist and a discussion of our Sunday readings at 10 am. Feel free to come to one or both!
